CFI84 DICTIONARY

To help familiarize new parents/ guardians and family members with frequently used terms and acronyms, the PTSA has compiled a list of commonly utilized words in the form of this CFI84 Dictionary.

​Asynchronous Learning Day: A school day where students learn independently at their own pace, typically from home and virtually, rather than attending live, in-person classes due to weather or other pre-planned causes.​

​

At Your School (AYS): A before and after care service that stands for At Your School onsite at CFI84 that serves a number of public schools providing programming. AYS is a trusted central Indiana partner that has specialized in creating accessible, reliable, and enriching programs for students and families as well as summer and holiday break childcare.

 

​Back to School Night: This event is usually scheduled in the evening during the first few weeks of school.  It is an opportunity for parents to come to the school and meet teachers and other parents.  This event is for parents/guardians only.

​

Book Buddies: Book Buddies is a one-on-one reading program that pairs older students, typically 2nd graders+ with the younger grades (K-1) to help them grow as readers. When a child discusses a book buddy, they are referring to a student from the upper grades who's reading age appropriate books, encouraging literacy. And your child gains another familiar face at school.

Chit Chat Book: This is a booklet of contacts, an unofficial school directory, opted in by parents/guardians, which provides information to help connect our students with one another. This book is helpful fo coordinating playdates, birthday invitations, and communications outside of school. It is available via electronic copy or a hard copy can be purchased through the PTSA Chit Chat Book Coordinator.

Community Meeting: The entire school convenes in the gym on most Friday mornings for a meeting including birthdays, the school mission, general sports and announcements. All family members/ guardians are welcome to join in the gym via the main entrance.

​

Dine to Donate (D2D): These are dine out nights through partnerships with local restaurants that commit to donating a portion of the proceeds back to the school throughout the school year. 

​

Discovery Days: Happen in the Fall and Spring Semester and are opportunities for students to learn new skills.  The various activities are often run by various community members (including parents and guardians)-so keep an eye out for announcements to volunteer. 

​

Drop the Prop: The phrase "drop the prop, don't prop the door" is a concise message emphasizing the importance of keeping doors, particularly fire doors, closed and unobstructed, maintaining security for students attending the school and egress. Otherwise all entries to the school for visitors and volunteers should occur through Door 1.

​

Edukits: Pre-ordered kits filled with all the school supplies that are needed during the year.  Orders are usually placed in the late spring for the next year and then delivered to the classroom for your child.

​

Food Recovery: When food is unused, untouched or unopened, kids can put food in food recovery for another child to eat who has already consumed their school lunch or home lunch. 

​

Kid's Night In: CFI84 transforms into an evening of fun for the PYP students (kindergarten-5th graders) from 4-7:30pm.  The event is run by the parents of K-5 students or Middle School student alumni.  A few weeks prior to the date, there is a sign-up that is circulated through school platforms. To volunteer onsite for the event, parents must complete a background check.

Learner Profile: The International Baccalaureate® (IB) learner profile is central to the IB curriculum, detailing a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities beyond academic success. CFI 84 uses the 10 learner profile attributes in lessons daily.

​

Toddle: CFI 84's platform for sharing information externally with parents/ guardians. Find a child's progress reports, school event calendar and classroom information there. Parents/ guardians receive notice to join Toddle when their child enrolls at CFI84. 

​

Parent Coffee & Copy: Volunteer opportunity to help teachers and staff onsite! A pre-scheduled time when parents gather to help complete tasks for teachers while socializing. Refreshments provided. Sign-ups occur through Sign-up genius.

​

Parent's In Touch Days (PIT Days): These are scheduled days for families to see what their students are working on at school and have the opportunity to meet with teachers.  There are usually scheduled times for families to sign-up and go to school during their selected time. Otherwise, students are home for the day and sometimes it may be an asynchronous learning day.

​

Parent Parties: parties with various themes that parents offer to host. Tickets are sold to help raise money for the school, usually coinciding with the Ultimate Parent Party Bash (below).

​

Primary Years ProgrammePYP offers an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary curriculum framework building on conceptual understanding. It is a student-centered approach to education for children aged 3-12, reflecting educational research, thought leadership and experience derived from IB World Schools including SEL and ELA.

​

Popsicle Social: Happens the week prior to school starting and it is an opportunity to come to the school, find out your classroom assignment and meet your teacher (and classmates!).

 

The Utimate Parent Party Bash: An Annual School Fundraiser also long-time known as Rock the World that contributes to a large majority of PTSA's funding for supporting the school

School Lunch: The school provides access daily to free school lunch (and breakfast) for all students regardless of income staus. Students may even bring home lunch and if still hungry gain access in the cafeteria to free school lunch. Unopened and unused  food is left in food recovery for any other students with additional hunger.

​

Spirit Wear: CFI84 logo stuff (for kids and adults) that you can purchase including t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. Students are typically issued one CFI84 t-shirt when joining the school. 

​

IB=International Baccalaureate       CFI=Center for Inquiry                ELA is English/Language Arts (Reading, Language, etc..)

SEL is Social Emotional Learning (expectations, problem solving, etc.)
